HOW TO MAKE NATURAL LINSEED OIL
In this video i show how to make a natural linseed oil that works great for sealing tools , leather, or making oil clothes.
"Raw" linseed oil is just that... linseed oil mercilessly squeezed from flax seed (graphic left and above courtesy Martin C. Michener, Ph.D., both taken from his new e-book : Botany Everywhere, 4th edition.) and packaged with no additional additives or preservatives. Raw linseed oil dries very slowly, taking weeks to fully cure.
How to Make Flaxseed Oil
To make the oil, use a manual oil press, also known as an oil expeller. Expellers grind whole seeds into a fine powder. The powder is compressed and the natural oil in the seeds is squeezed out and expelled from the bottom of the grinder. Oil presses work for any seeds that contain more than 25 percent oil, such as flax seeds.
Linseed oil is a common carrier used in oil paint. It can also be used as a painting medium, making oil paints more fluid, transparent and glossy. It is available in varieties such as cold-pressed, alkali-refined, sun-bleached, sun-thickened, and polymerised (stand oil).
