Palm Oil - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Palm Oil. Oil palm is a uniquely productive tropical crop with a potential yield capacity well in excess of 10 tonnes of oil per hectare (t/ha)—for comparison temperate oil crops such as rapeseed and sunflower yield about 0.5–1.0t/ha.
Palm oil originated in western Guinea and is now cultivated in other tropical countries. Mostly it is obtained from the fruit of the African palm. Palm oil is orange-red in color due to its beta-carotene content. It is used in cooking oil, margarine, and rich-tasting processed foods.

The palm oil of 43×10 6 MT (metric ton) was produced in 2008 that formed 27% in the world vegetable oil market. The by-products of palm oil production are mainly palm oil mill effluent (POME) and empty fruit bunch (EFB), where 10 wt% of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) is POME, and 20 wt% is EFB. In 2008, the world-wide EFB production is reported in ...
The modern oil palm tree Elaeis guineensis has three fruit forms: dura (thick-shelled); pisifera (shell-less); and tenera (thin-shelled) (Figure 11.3).The tenera palm yields far more oil than dura and is the basis for commercial palm oil production in all of South East Asia. In 2013, a remarkable discovery was made. The Shell gene has proven extremely challenging to identify in oil palm, given ...

A sharp melting transition associated with hardened palm oil can be seen between 53°C and 58°C. On the cooling cycle, the supercooling due to oil dispersion is clear and is similar to that observed in the mineral oil dispersion of Figure 3.4.An as-yet-unexplained effect (but see §3.3.2) is seen on the heating cycle, where the solid content appears to rise above 100%, just prior to melting.
Palm kernel oil is extracted from the seeds of the palm. Palm oil is healthier than palm kernel oil because it has less saturated fat and higher antioxidant activity from its significant amount of vitamin E. Because palm kernel oil must be extracted from the seeds, it cannot be obtained organically.

Palm oil mill effluent, or POME, is the effluent generated from the final stages of palm oil production in the mill. For every tonne of crude palm oil extracted from milling, about 2.5 tonnes of POME is generated (Sulaiman et al., 2009), and in 2005, about 66.8 million tonnes of POME were produced (Vairappan & Yen, 2008). It is colloidal ...
