A twin‐screw extruder for oil extraction: I. Direct
A new process, in which sunflower seeds are pressed in a twin‐screw extruder, is examined here. The screw profile was first optimized. Oleic sunflower seeds were crushed and 80% of the oil was removed. The resultant oil was of good quality, with acid numbers below 2 mg KOH/g of oil and total phosphorus contents of about 100 ppm.
A new application of twin-screw extruder as a machine to conduct a thermo-mechanical pressing and a solvent extraction of sunflower oil in a single step and in a continuous mode was studied. Experiments were conducted using a CLEXTRAL BC 45 co-rotating twin-screw extruder and whole sunflower seeds with fatty acid methyl esters as a solvent.

Screw profile used for optimization of oil expression from sunflower seeds in a BC45 twin-screw extruder.
A twin-screw extruder for oil extraction: I. Direct expression of oleic sunflower seeds. Seventy-five percent of the oil of sunflower seeds can be extracted by crushing, and the fatty cake then contains about 15% of oil. The oil levels remaining in the cake can be reduced to less than 2% by solvent extraction.
Oil extraction of oleic sunflower seeds by twin screw
The plotting of the oil extraction yield (R) as a function of specific mechanical energy showed two operating zones permitting oil expression of sunflower seed using twin-screw extruder . High oil extraction yield was obtained under SME zone from 100 to 140 Wh/kg. That condition was obtained under 80 °C, 24 kg/h and 100–150 rpm.

GET PRICEDesign of Twin Screw Oil Expeller for Pongamia Pinnata Seeds
The problems associated with the single screw expeller is that, it requires three or more passes to expel oil from seeds, which increases the production time and are also less efficient. In this paper, a counter rotating twin screw expeller is designed for extraction of oil from the Pongamia pinnata seeds.

Oil extraction by extrusion. Clextral has introduced a method of using twin screw extrusion to extract the oil of a variety of grains, including rapeseed (canola), sunflower seeds, castor beans and flax seeds. Clextral's process offers a significant advantage over traditional techniques, which require transfer of each product batch...

–Sunflower Oil Seed Processing. It is after the middle 20th century when sunflowers were planted as oil crops with large areas, and with years’ hard research work, the former Soviet Union sunflower specialists increased the oil ratio from 35% in 1935 to 45% in 1955, and some sunflower varieties had an oil ration of 55%.
