Steam explosion, an adiabatic expansion and conversion process of thermal energy into mechanical energy, was employed to extract oil from sesame seed. Steam explosion was performed with different pressure levels and retention time periods (2.0MPa 10 s and 1.0MPa 30 s).

This study suggests that steam explosion pretreatment destroys the biological cell structure of sesame seed, resulting in better extraction, which is beneficial to oil extraction from sesame seed. As such, it may be said that steam explosion pretreatment is an effective and indeed feasible method for the extraction of sesame seed oil.
