Anaerobic Treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent in Pilot
1. Introduction. Palm oil industry is one of the most important types of agriculture based commerce in Malaysia and Indonesia. Malaysia covered about 5 million hectares of the palm cultivated area with 426 operating mills in 2011 [].Large quantity of water is required during the extraction process; consequently, the palm oil production generates huge quantity of palm oil mill effluent (POME).
Abstract. Worldwide, crude palm oil industries generate an overwhelming amount of palm oil mill effluent (POME). Since the past few decades, environmental issues associated with POME disposal have challenged the palm oil-producing nations which led them to reevaluate and develop their waste management strategies by using advanced biotreatment technologies.
Production of Biogas from Palm Oil Mill Effluent
Batch anaerobic digestion of 8 l palm oil mill effluent was studied in a 25 l bioreactor at 30 °C (thermophilic condition) and pH controlled at 7. POME activated sludge and cow manure at ratio of 1:2.5 POME was used. The biogas produced is 7.825 l at hydraulic retention time of 44 days.
