Biofuels in Asia - Asian Clean Fuels Association
• Biofuels: fuels from a variety of sources of biomass: –plant materials –certain types of crops –recycled or waste vegetable oils • Biodiesel/bioethanol: –They can replace conventional diesel/petrol entirely respectively –They can be blended with diesel/petrol in different proportions:

Biofuels: Effects on Global Agricultural Prices
This study finds that EU biofuel policy results in 16% higher prices for plant oils, 10% higher prices for oilseeds and about 2.6% higher global crop prices on average. This is substantial, as it is the isolated effect of just one policy of the EU, not yet including other bioenergy policies or other countries, such as the USA.
Italian gas and oil company ENI has launched a pilot project in the city of Gafsa, Tunisia to grow castor oil plants and use the oil as a biofuel feedstock. The project would cultivate the castor oil plants in semi-arid areas and the oil extracted from the plant’s fruit would be used to fuel ENI’s biorefineries, ANSAmed reported on 16 January.
Biofuel: Africa's new oil? - SciDev.Net
The choices of crop are diverse — from corn to rapeseed and jatropha. Liquid biofuels include biodiesel derived from plant oils and bioethanol made from sugarcane, maize and other starchy crops. Global production of biofuels consists primarily of ethanol.
At a moderate rate of continued growth, Asia will require 750 million liters of gasoline and diesel by 2030. To address the growing need for energy, Asian countries (China specifically) have begun to implement aggressive biofuel programs.
Sustainable aviation fuels prepare for take-off | F&L Asia
Waste-to-fuels company Fulcrum BioEnergy started construction of their new Sierra Biofuels Plant in Nevada in May 2024. The manufacturing facility will convert 175,000 tons of household garbage into-low-carbon renewable transport fuel, using its proprietary thermochemical process, when operations commence in quarter one 2024.
Biofuels can be produced from organic matter, or biomass, such as corn or sugar, vegetable oils or waste feedstocks. As biofuels emit less carbon dioxide (CO 2) than conventional fuels they can be blended with existing fuels as an effective way of reducing CO 2 emissions in the transport sector. The use of biofuels have grown over the past decade, driven largely by the introduction of new energy policies in Europe, the USA and Brazil that call for more renewable, lower-carbon fuels for ...
Implementation of Biofuels | Water for all
Algae-based biofuels. Because algae can be produced in salt or freshwater, saline, arid or dry land, algae would not compete with food crops for land and water use [6]. Its relatively short harvest cycle of 1-10 days and high energy outputs versus energy inputs ratio makes it very commercially viable [7].
Amyris is a synthetic biology biofuel company, founded in 2003 and based in Emeryville, CA that is positioning itself to become a leading provider of renewable specialty chemicals and transportation fuels worldwide. Currently the company has between 300 and 350 employees.
Biofuels & Bioenergy Conference | Energy Conference
First generation biofuels are processed from the sugars and vegetable oils formed in arable crops, which can be smoothly extracted applying conventional technology. In comparison, advanced biofuels are made from lignocellulose biomass or woody crops, agricultural residues or waste, which makes it tougher to extract the requisite fuel.
South Africa launches first continuous hydrothermal
South Africa’s first continuous hydrothermal liquefaction plant was launched at North-West University (NWU) earlier this month, which will lead to the production of bio-oils, bio-char, biochemical and biogas.. Th continuous hydrothermal liquefaction plant is one of the outputs of the Department of Science and Technology- and the National Research Foundation-supported South African Research …
ENI launches sustainable biofuel pilot project Oils & Fats
January 30, 2024 Italian gas and oil company ENI has launched a pilot project in the city of Gafsa, Tunisia to grow castor oil plants and use the oil as a biofuel feedstock.
Renewable Energy in ASEAN – Heinrich Böll Foundation
According to a report from the ASEAN Centre for Energy in 2024, ASEAN is richly endowed with diverse renewable energy sources such as biomass in Thailand, huge geothermal potential in Indonesia and the Philippines. Moreover, located close to the equator, the amount of sunshine throughout the year could bring a significant amount of solar potential.
Biofuel production: Challenges and opportunities
While the second generation of biofuels is the production of bioethanol and biodiesel from several species of plants such as jatropha, cassava, miscanthus, straw, grass and wood. The third generation of biofuels is the production of biodiesel from microalgae and microbes [4], [27].
12 Synthetic Biology Biofuel & Biochemical Companies to Watch
Solazyme’s engineered algae produce various oils and biochemicals that can be tailored for biofuel production or as biotechnology replacements for petrochemicals and plant oils in a range of products ranging from fuels, chemicals, cosmetics, and food additives.
ABB solutions for biomass and waste bioconversion
Biofuel is produced from renewable resources, especially plant biomass, vegetable oils, or treated municipal and industrial wastes. Many biofuel and biogas technologies are being jump-started through government incentives, but in the long run they must be able to stand on their own economically.
